Crystal can be in the body anywhere from 2-20 hours. However, after users start to come off the drug or "crash" they become emotionally instable and highly irritable. The drug also causes heart palpitations, blurred vision, extended wakefulness, and damage to the brain, lungs and liver. The ultimate side effect is death from overdose. 
Research on animals over the last 20 years shows that high doses of meth can cause damage to neuron cell-endings. Dopamine and serotonin containing neurons do not die after meth abuse, but their nerve endings ("terminals") are cut back and re-growth appears to be stunted.
