Because meth is so easy to create it has become a major problem in rural America with meth cooks setting up shop in their own home using chemicals they have purchased at local stores.
Changes were made in 2005 with the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act. With this act, any products that contain pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, or phenylpropanolamine must be put behind the counter or in a locked cabinet at retail stores. Also, customers who want to buy products that contain these ingredients must sign a logbook and show I.D. for each purchase.
Users who take meth habitually build a tolerance to the drugs effects. This causes them to take more or even change the method of how they take the drug (i.e. snorting meth to smoking meth to increase their rush).
$18.6 million was spent on meth lab clean ups in 2004.
Making meth is fairly easy if you know what to look for. Typically, the ingredients used to make meth in clandestine meth labs are generally household products that by themselves present little danger, but when combined can have serious toxic and explosive effects.
