The DEA is reporting that there has been a dramatic decrease in illegal meth labs. However, they are pointing out that a larger amount of more potent/pure meth is being smuggled into the U.S. from Mexico.
Back in 2002, over 12 million people in the US over the age of 12 reported trying meth at least once in their lifetime. Of these 12 million, over 590,000 reported having used methamphetamine in the past month.
Similar to cocaine, meth is a powerful "upper" that produces alertness and elation, along with a variety of adverse reactions.
There are many catastrophic accidents that are associated with the illegal manufacturing of crystal meth. There have been reported cases such as automobile accidents, explosions and fires triggered by the illegal manufacturing of crystal meth. There is also the possibility of environmental contamination that may be the result of in appropriate disposal of waste material used in the process of manufacturing the crystal meth.
Meth is made easily in clandestine laboratories with relatively inexpensive over-the-counter ingredients.
