Dental patients who exhibit symptoms of "meth mouth" are more likely to be injection drug users, according to a new study.
Research on animals over the last 20 years shows that high doses of meth can cause damage to neuron cell-endings. Dopamine and serotonin containing neurons do not die after meth abuse, but their nerve endings ("terminals") are cut back and re-growth appears to be stunted.
Crystal meth (short for methamphetamine) belongs to the class of drugs known as amphetamines, stimulants that have both legitimate medical uses and illicit uses. The drug resembles tiny ice crystals or rock candy, and it can be snorted, smoked or injected, producing quick, powerful highs that make it difficult to resist repeated use.
Crystal meth labs often have a presence of little traffic during the day, while there is a lot of traffic at night. The occupants usually are seen leaving their premises to smoke, something that cannot be done in the presence of the chemicals they are using.
Last year alone more than 20% of the meth labs seized had children living there.
