Crystal meth is damaging to many areas of the body -- including the brain, kidneys and liver -- but the heart damage can be extensive. Meth abuse has spread out of the urban cities and is now a serious problem in small-town America. Current estimates state that 12-14 year olds living in small towns are 104% more likely to use meth than those who live in larger cities.
Some people take meth because of the long-lasting high that it gives. Methamphetamine causes numerous neurotransmitters to be released in the brain, producing a sense of euphoria that may last as long as 12 hours, depending on how the drug was taken. 
During the 1970s meth production was centered in clandestine labs throughout the Western and Southwestern United States. During this time period disputes over control of the illegal methamphetamine market became responsible for the kind of gang-related violence once restricted to the cocaine trade.
